Breaking Free

One of my ultra favorite songs is called Breaking Free. It is by Skillet featuring Lacey Strum. Let me tell you, it is AWESOME. But more importantly, it has an amazing meaning.

A lot of us are dealing with some sucky stuff. Whether it be depression and anxiety or divorce or the loss of a loved one. Like it sucks. We all go through some really hard stuff, but through that all, with God we can break free. We can break free of all the pain and hurt and sadness.

The song is talking about depression. It talks about not being able to going on with the suffering. It talks about breaking chains and not being afraid to live your life. It talks about not changing no matter what other people have to say. Its about not letting with others have to say take you captive.

Y’all, oh my goodness, this is so so important. No body but God has the right to define you. God is the one person who has permission to define us. And He does define us. He defines us as child of the King, Loved, Worthy, His daughter. Like holy moly this is so important.

You have the power to not let anyone but God define you. Like honestly you don’t have to let anyone else words define you. Not at all! You can live in freedom. You can break free from the slavery that other peoples words have put you through. You don’t have to live in that anymore.

You can live in the freedom of who God says you are. And let me tell you, that is wayyyyy greater than what other people have to say about you. Why listen to what other people have to say about you when the King tells you otherwise.

My brother said some pretty hurtful things when he found something out. And honestly it would be so easy to let that be my identity. But I know who I am and whose I am. I don’t have to let my brother define who I am, I get to decide who gets to say who I am and I chose God. I am choosing to let God define me instead of the hurtful things that other people have said.

Maybe thats what you need to do, maybe you need to give your identity over to God and let Him take the wheel and define you. Maybe you think your unloved, worthless, stupid, a mistake, I could keep going but I’m gonna stop there. Y’all those are true. None of that is true. You are oh so loved. You are worthy, you are worthy of God sending His son to die for you. You are not stupid, you are smart maybe just in your own way. You are not a mistake, darling God doesn’t make mistakes.

Those lies do not make up your identity, what God has to say makes up your identity and that’s all. Not what I have to say, not what your parents have to say, not what bullies have to say, but what God has to say
