Childlike Faith

We are called to have a childlike faith. In Matthew 18 and 19 this is talked about in different ways.

Jesus said, “Leave the children alone, and don’t try to keep them from coming to me, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Matthew 19:14

“Truly I tell you,” He said, “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself like this child-this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 18:3-4

What does a childlike faith look like?

That’s a good question. When I think of a childlike faith, I think of how children are so pure in their intentions usually and their beliefs. They are curious and always trying to learn.

So to me, a childlike faith looks like always trying to learn more and more about God and Jesus, being pure in your intentions behind it, living out with pure intentions, and being totally dependent on God.

A child is completely dependent on their parents. God wants us to be the same with Him. He wants us to be completely dependent on Him. He wants us to go to Him for everything, even the small things.

That could mean asking God if what you are about to buy from the store is what you are supposed to buy. It could mean always reading God’s word to learn more. It could mean praying and asking for His guidance before making any big commitments or purchases. It could mean praying and asking God to do His will in your life instead of what you want.

When I think of a child, I think of someone who is generally okay with sharing (I’m talking 8-12 year olds). I think of someone who does little things to make other people happy. I think of someone who tries to please their parents.

We need to be trying to please God. Ultimately, God’s the only opinion that matters in our life. In most children’s life, their parents' opinions and comments are really important to them. It should be the same with God. We should strive to do God’s will for our life and do things that please Him rather than doing things to please people of this world.

The Lord protects those of childlike faith; I was facing death and He saved me.

Psalms 116:6

God wants all of us to have a childlike faith. Children are in general the purest forms of people. They don’t always know bad circumstances. They usually have big hearts.

We need to have big hearts. We are called to love everyone. Most children create friends with everyone they meet regardless of things like clothes, hair, skin tone, etc. We need to do the same. We need to really love everyone.

Have you ever noticed that children can be friends with anyone? Unless they were taught to exclude people, in general they do not exclude anybody for whatever reasons adults might. As adults we need to do the same. We need to not be excluding people for whatever reason.

We need to strive to have a childlike faith. The children are who the kingdom of heaven belongs to. We are all children of God. We should look up to God and strive to learn more and want to please Him just like we would our earthly parents.

How are you trying to have a childlike faith?

Hold onto hope and stay strong.
