Death Has To Wait

One of my favorite quotes is by Lacey Sturm. It says “death has to wait because I have a song to sing and so do you.” This quote was in her first book, The Reason. When this quote came up, it was after talking about her near death birth when she was born.

I think that this quote can be applied to a lot of things. A big one is suicide. So many people who commit suicide feel like there is no purpose in their life. They feel like no one cares about anything they do or say so why stay.

This quote reminds us that we have a song to sing. We have words that matter. We have something to say whether or not people want to listen to us. We have something to give to the world. Death has to wait.

We have a song to sing, words that need to be said, actions that need to happen, hugs that need to be given. Death shouldn’t be so soon.

There are a lot of people in the world who battle with suicidal thoughts and actions. To many it is hard to believe how they get there. I’m here to tell you its really easy to get to that point. After years of being bullied, battling with mental illness, dealing with abuse, something traumatic happening, it can be easy to fall down this path.

Mental illness is not something that poofs away because you or someone around you doesn’t want it. Boy would it be nice if it worked that way but it doesn’t. It’s a battle everyday to even sometimes get out of bed. People think that you can just get over it when your depression is this deep but honey it’s not. It’s not a snap your fingers and its gone.

Suicide usually comes from someone who is battling with severe depression. They just give up. They feel like it is not worth the fight anymore. They feel like their life isn’t worth living anymore.

People who battle with suicidal ideation or thoughts constantly hear that suicide is selfish. I’m sure you’ve heard it. I don’t think it is. But thats for another day but hearing that can make the person feel even guiltier which leads them even further down that path. They already listen to their brain telling them horrible stuff, they don’t need people reminding them that the only way they see out is selfish.

Death has to wait. We get to choose. We get to choose between life and death. God wants us to choose life. This can mean different things. It can mean literal death and life or it can mean spiritual life and death. I think in both ways, God wants you to choose life. He made you as His beautiful creation. He would never want to see you choose death spiritually or physically.

We get to choose even in the deepest and darkest valleys if we are going to choose life. It’s hard. It’s really hard sometimes to choose life when death is so appealing but you need to choose life. Life may be hard and sometimes feel like too much, but death is well death. No more seeing your loved ones and who knows where you’ll be when you die.

Life is precious. It can be taken away in a second. When we have the option, we need to be choosing and promoting life. Life may suck sometimes, but it is always a beautiful thing.

If you are struggling today with suicidal thoughts or actions, please reach out for help. The world would not be better off without you. This world needs you to help change it. You are loved no matter what your brain tells you. Please choose life. Please choose to stay.
