Find Thankfulness In The Mundane

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States. It’s a day where we are supposed to spend with family and talk about things that we are thankful for. 2020 has been a really difficult year and I feel like a lot of people think there is nothing to be thankful for but there is so much to be thankful for.

Maybe you lost someone this year, be thankful for the times you had with them. Maybe you experienced a different kind of loss, you can have gratitude in going through that because it will be used for good. Maybe life threw you a lot of curveballs, like losing your job, your security, your peace, etc., we can be thankful that we are still alive.

I know there are a lot of people who are struggling with being alive especially after what kind of year we have had in 2020. I 100% understand that. I started this year of not completely wanting to be here so I get it. I got it over with before all heck broke loose.

Life is something that we should be grateful for. Yes life is hard. Yes we go through sucky things in life. Yes we have to go through losses. But there is something special about being alive. You make an impact. You may not think it’s a big one but small impacts lead to larger ones.

You may not know how you impact someone’s life but them losing you would have a huge impact on their life. Maybe just smiling at someone or complimenting them made an impact on their mood. There was an impact that you had.

There are so many things to be grateful for. Things like family, friends, pets, life, a job, a place to live, a place to worship, a safe place, that coffee you drink in the morning. You see the key isn’t to always look for big things, it’s also looking at little things. It’s really easy to be thankful for the big things, it’s harder to be thankful for the things we take granted for. Those things that we do daily that we don’t think twice about.

Here’s a list of mundane things to be thankful about:

  • Indoor plumbing

  • Cell phones

  • A warm place to live

  • A bed

  • Blankets

  • TV

  • Journals

  • Pens

  • Computers

  • Ipads

  • Food

  • Coffee

  • Money

  • Drinks

  • Books

  • Education

  • Pets

  • Bibles

  • Past friends

  • Time with people who have past or left your life

  • Heat in the winter

  • AC in the summer

  • Leaves changing color

  • Cars

  • Gas

  • Being in a safe neighborhood

  • Pillows

  • Jewelery

  • Makeup

  • Music

  • Pastors

  • Churches

  • Air

  • Little good things that happen throughout the day like finding something you lost

  • Making someone smile

  • Cheering someone up

  • Being there for someone

  • People to talk to

  • A way to talk to people

  • Doctors

  • Nurses

  • Therapists

  • Hospitals

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Running water

  • Clean water

  • Grocery stores

  • Paved roads

  • Friends

  • Clothes

  • Shoes

  • Happiness

  • Joy

  • Sadness

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Good days

  • Bad days

This list could go on and on. There is always something to be thankful about even on the darkest days. When you can’t get out of bed, be thankful for a warm place to lie. When you are hungry, be thankful about having access to food. When going to take a shower, be thankful to be able to take an indoor shower.

There is so so much to be thankful about. I know I need practice thanking God for more things in my life. Without Him, I would have nothing. Apart from God, we have nothing.

This thanksgiving, be thankful for even the small things in your life.

Hold onto hope and stay strong.
