Renew Your Mind

We are told to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. What does that look like. What does that mean? Where does it say this?

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. -Romans 12:2

There’s other places in scripture that talk about renewing your mind or your spirit. This is important. We should not conform to the world. We are not of the world so we should not be living in it by taking part in some of its customs.

Renewing your mind here means making your mind more like Christs’. Our end goal in this life is to live like Christ. We need to renew our mind so that we have more thoughts that point us back to God and represent Him.

Renewing your mind looks like trying to live like Christ and thinking first of the Father, everyone else second. It looks like doing God’s will, not the will of man. It looks like not living in the world with its sinfulness but living with the joy and hope of Heaven.

This is key. In order to follow Christ, we need to renew our minds. We cannot be living both of God and of the world.

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money -Matthew 6:24

Here Jesus is talking about money but it can be applied to everything. God should be our ultimate master. He should be number one in our life. He is the one we should be answering and taking orders from. Don’t get me wrong, with work you do have a boss but they are not the master of your entire life, just the work aspect. Which means don’t go telling your boss I said they aren’t the boss of you. At work, they very much are but they are not your overall life master.

Renewing your mind is not as easy as it can sound. You have to learn how to basically rewire your brain to get it to respond first to God then to the world. I don’t have it completely mastered yet and I don’t know anyone who does.

You don’t have to get it all together for God. You just have to try your hardest and be who you truly are through God. You have to work on renewing your mind to be closer to God and by striving to live like Christ.
