Study With Me: Hosea Chapter 1 & 2

Okay y’all this is a totally unplanned blog post/series but I feel like it’s a must. I just started the book of Hosea and finished chapter 1 tonight. Let me tell you, it is so good and it filled with so much stuff. A lot of people ask how I study my bible when I draw connections and write notes so I figured this would be a way for me to bring you along.

First off lets start with the background of chapter 1. Hosea is the son of Beeri. The Lord spoke to Hosea when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were the kings go Judah and Jeroboam was the king of Israel.

Let’s start in verse 2 where the Lord speaks to Hosea and tells him to marry and prostitute. You may be thinking why but God goes on to explain that it is to symbolize how Israel has been acting that way by turning away from God and worshiping other gods.

Verse two is where we find out the name of who he marries. He marries a woman named Gomer who becomes pregnant with their first son, Jezreel. The name is because God was about to punish the king Jehu’s dynasty to avenge the murders he committed at Jezreel.

Next Gomer becomes pregnant again. This time the Lord tells them to name their daughter Lo-ruhamah which means not loved or no mercy. Hosea was not showing love or mercy to their daughter. This was to show that Go was no longer going to show mercy or love to Israel.

After this, Gomer becomes pregnant with another baby boy. The Lord tells Hosea to name him Lo-ammi which means not my people. Lo-ammi was possibly not Hosea’s son.

Okay let’s stop here. All these names are connected somehow. They are all prophetic names from God to the people of Israel. First Jezreel was the name prophesying the destruction of king Jehu’s dynasty. Next Lo-ruhamah was prophesying the lack of mercy and love that God was going to be giving Israel. Then Lo-ammi was prophesying the marital breakup of Himself and Israel.

Let’s go back to verse 4. It says King Jehu’s dynasty this correlates or is parallel to the house of Israel. Then the murders he committed of Jezreel refers to events in 1 Kings 21.

The last note I have is for verse 10. God intends to restore His people and His land. It’s just a matter of time until it happens.

The way I get a lot of my notes is 2 ways. 1) paraphrasing what I read into a way I comprehend better and can share. 2) through my study bible which has notes on the bottom about verses and passages.

Thank you for reading along with me, I hope you enjoyed the first part of this series on Hosea. More to come!
