Today we are going to talk about Hosea chapters 4 & 5. Remember what I get out of these chapters is totally my interpretation as well as information from my study bible. I combine the two into a way for me to understand. These notes are the notes directly out of my bible I hope this can help if you don’t understand something. Let’s begin.
Chapter 4
Verse 1-3 is God making His case against Israel
Verse 4 is basically saying don’t point the finger at someone else when the finger is pointed at you.
Verse 5- Hosea’s symbols for Israel is mother, children and bride. Your mother in this verse refers to Hosea 2:4-5\
Verse 6- my people is what God refers to Israel as
Verse 6- “since you priests refuse to know me”- the religious people were supposed to teach of God (Lev 10:11, Mal 2:6-7)
Verse 6-9- God is punishing both the people and the priests due tot he priests abusing their power.
Verse 10- “They will play the prostitute”- this means that they will be playing a prostitute by worshiping baal
Verse 12- they would seek guidance from wooden idols. Looking after idols would make them foolish. They played the prostitute by worshiping other gods.
Verse 14- why blame some when it’s everyone?
Verse 15- Judah is warned to not live the same way Israel did but later falls the same
Verse 16- Israel did not want to change their ways.
Chapter 5
Verse 1- it was Israel’s rulers that led to unfaithfulness. Mizpah=home of Jepthah (Judges 10:17, 11:33) Tabor= Scene of Barak’s victory (Judges 4:14)
Verse 2- God is willing to settle with Israel
Verse 3- No one can hide from God
Verse 4- Israel forgot their God. Israel’s habits would not allow them to return to God
Verse 6- God has left Israel until they repent
Verse 8- Beth-aven=being used as another name for Bethel, meaning “house of God”
Verse 10- like thieves= moving a neighbors boundary marker was forbidden (Deut 19;14, 27:17). Anger= suggests overflowing fury (Isaiah 14:5)
Verse 13- used physical infirmities to describe spiritual corruption
Verse 14- God will be ruthless like a lion to Judah and Israel
Verse 15- God will return back to his place expecting them to return to Him.
