Random Thoughts About Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is something that effects me every day. A lot of you have seen my tics. A lot have seen when they are bad and lately you’ve seen when they haven’t been so prevalent. Even when my tics are bad, it still effects me.

When my tics aren’t bad, they don’t cause me as much distress as when they are bad. Even though my tics have recently been far and few in between, there are still moments when it flares. It flares at work after rushes. Maybe not the first one but the second and third you better bet that its gonna show up.

I have been very blessed in the department of my boss at work. This boss is my boss is from my first time job. That was over 3 years ago. Now I wouldn’t have thought that she would still remember about my Tourette’s years later but she does. But the thing is is that she’s normalized it. She sees it as a part of me and doesn’t make it a bigger deal than it is. Which its not really that big of a deal. It is so nice to have a boss like this.

Anywho, my tics are still here even if there are not as bad. I still will have tics throughout the day but usually they are my lesser visible ones like my eyes or my nose. My eye tic sucks and sometimes makes me incredibly dizzy but sometimes it doesn’t and its over quickly. My nose tic doe not bother me at all. It’s such a nice simple, noncomplex tic that it’s refreshing.

Tourette syndrome is something that affects 1 in every 100 people. It is so common yet no one ever has it, it seems like. Tourette’s is one of those things that a lot of people know about but has so many misconsumptions about it. A common one is that people who have Tourette’s swear up and down. This is called coprolalia. Only a small percentage of people who have Tourette’s actually has this. I am very lucky and do not have this. But there are people who do and that’s okay. It is not something we can control. It is not, however, something to make fun of and mock.

It is not okay to say someone has Tourette’s because they are constantly lying. It is not okay to jock about having Tourette’s by flailing your arms and screaming that you have Tourette’s. It is not okay going around cursing and saying you have Tourette’s. These things are not okay. It is not something that should happen.

It is not something that we can control. It is not something we can really stop. Yes we can suppress it but all that does is throw us in ticing fits when we stop suppressing them.

Just because my tics are not as bad or prevalent as there were, does not mean I was faking it the whole time. It means I’m on an upside of my tics and they are under control through medication.

It drives me nuts when people think that

because you aren’t ticing as much that you were faking it. Seriously?!?!? Why on earth would someone fake having Tourette’s? It is literally so hard to actually deal with and can cause so much pain. I can tell you that never in my life have I faked my tics and I am quite sure everyone in the Tourette community can tell you the same thing.

Tics are not fun. I would not wish them on my worst enemy. They are not something I want anyone to deal with. It’s something I wish no one had to deal with. Tourette’s is not a fun disorder. It is where you have no control over your body at one time or another. It is not something to be mocked. It is not something to make fun of someone for.
