Why I Advocate For Therapy

Therapy is something that has been a huge blessing in my life. It is a place where I can go and talk about anything I want without feeling guilty or judged. It's a place where I know my emotions are valid and I can say anything I want.

Therapy is something that has helped me tremendously. It has given me better coping skills and has taught me a lot about who I am and my disorders. It has given me a safe place.

I have been in therapy since I was 15. Truthfully, I should've started sooner but I was too scared to mention my issues to my parents. I started therapy originally for my tourettes. They were teaching me something called CBIT to help control them . that did not work . but we started moving on and working on other things.

Eventually, we got around to some of my bigger issues, my anxiety and what we thought then was just depression but was really bipolar. I learned a lot then. I was at a place where they had grad students do clinicals so I changed therapists every 2-4 months. That was not fun but it taught me how to work with many different people and adapt quicker to change. It gave me different perspectives on what was going on in my life at that time .

Therapy has helped a lot. It may not always seem like that, especially when I am having a rough time but it truly does help. I have learned healthy coping skills to keep me away from my unhealthy ones. I have learned how to better communicate my needs. I learned about how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected. I learned I am not alone in my issues by going to group therapy.

Therapy is somewhere that you can go and talk about anything and everything. If there is something that is weighing you down, you can talk about it. If you have a huge decision to make, you can talk it out. If life is going good, you can talk about what is different and how you can keep it up. You can talk about the hard and scary. You can talk about the sad and upsetting. You can talk about the good and happy.

Therapy is a safe place. Unless you are in a place where you seem to be a danger to yourself or someone else, everything you say stays between you and your therapist. This is a place you can come and not feel judged or discriminated against.

Therapy is a place where you can learn useful skills. You can be taught healthier coping skills that may help you get past the hard and ugly things in life. Things like grounding and deep breathing for anxiety. Things like coloring and listening to music for depression. Things like using an ice cube or frozen orange instead of self harming.

Therapy has so many benefits. You do not have to be severely depressed or mentally sick in order to go to therapy. You can benefit from it even when life is going well. Therapy has changed my life for the better. If you are struggling or even slightly thinking about going into therapy, I highly recommend just trying it. If it's not for you, it's not for you, but there's no harm in trying.
